8 High Fantasy Books with Necromancers

 July 23, 2020

By  Brit Poe

When I set out to write my own fantasy book featuring a necromancer protagonist, I came to realize that high fantasy books with  necromancers are few and far between. Sure, there is a handful of great urban fantasy books with necromancer characters but that's a post for another day. Today, I'd like to share 8 high fantasy books with necromancers, some of which inspired my own - The Dark Between. These books often feature dark fantasy themes, explore light vs dark, and incorporate other dark elements like demons, spirits, and darker shades of witchcraft. I hope you find your next favorite read!

8 High Fantasy Books with Necromancers

1. The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price...

A story of scorned witches, sinister curses, and resurrection, The Bone Witch is the start of a dark fantasy trilogy.

This book is not a fast read, its a slow burn, but it is beautiful and worth the read.

2. Willow of Ashes by Ellie Raine

Twin necromancers, their magic split at birth, may be the world's salvation... or its extinction.

amazon reviewer

Willow of Ashes gives readers a fresh universe of dark tales, guiding spirits, hauntingly yellow eyes, battling corpses, and witty Reapers. You cannot help but enjoy the intricacy of the world that Ms. Raine provides us as it gives levels and realms to its environment.

3. Incursion by Mitchell Hogan

A corrupted power stirs from beyond the grave.
A sacred order of knights sworn to protect the world from evil.
The Necromancer Queen will rise again.

amazon reviewer

This is Mitchell Hogan’s best work thus far. Fantastic story, character development, and action. The Revenant Winds world gets better and better the more it’s fleshed out. Cannot wait for more!!

4. Death's Kiss by Lexi Swann

Crystal waited months for the return of her lover, but when the king’s soldiers finally begin arriving home from the wars, Brent is nowhere to be found. It doesn’t take her long to realize the worst has befallen him, and Crystal soon partners with another soldier to bring him back to life. Will she have the heart to see her task through, or will her heart seek a different path entirely?

amazon reviewer

Definitely recommend this lovely twisted tale about Crystal and her adventure into necromantic practices.

5. Twice Dead by Caitlin Seal

Naya, the daughter of a sea merchant captain, nervously undertakes her first solo trading mission in the necromancer-friendly country bordering her homeland of Talmir. Unfortunately, she never even makes it to the meeting. She's struck down in the streets of Ceramor. Murdered.

But death is not the end for Naya.

amazon reviewer

The world that this author is built is truly creative! I definitely stayed up reading this one. Loved the politics, and the intrigue, and the entire premise. The protagonist gets murdered in the very first chapter - how cool is that?! Looking forward to the sequel.

6. The Summoner by Gail Z. Martin

The comfortable world of Martris Drayke, second son of King Bricen of Margolan, is shattered when his older half-brother, Jared, and Jared's dark mage, Foor Arontala, kill the king and seize the throne. Tris flees, harboring a deep secret. In a land where spirits walk openly and influence the affairs of the living, he suspects he may be the mage heir to the power of his grandmother, Bava K'aa, once the greatest sorceress of her age. Such magic would make Tris a Summoner, the rarest of magic gifts, capable of arbitrating between the living and the dead.

amazon reviewer

I love this series! Great characters, a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

7. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

So this one isn't exactly high fantasy. It's more science fantasy. But it's so good, so I wanted to include it in this list.

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.

amazon reviewer

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb Trilogy Book 1) is a stunning blend of fantasy, science fiction, and horror.

8. The Dark Between by Brit Poe

This one's mine!

The Dark Between by Brit Poe

A fiesty necromancer out for revenge, an immortal from the Netherwold, and a dark being intent on shattering the natural balance.
